Dog Dematting in Plano: What to Do When Your Dog's Coat Gets Tangled and Matted

At Lakeside Pet Spa, we remove mats carefully, on our own schedule, not rushing through them because you're in a cage or waiting for the next appointment. We take as much time as your dog needs and stop if they're uncomfortable.
Mats and tangles don't just look messy. They trap moisture against your dog's skin, stop air from reaching the undercoat, and can cause painful irritation or even hot spots that lead to infection. If you've noticed your dog's fur is bunching up, pulling tight, or feels stiff when you touch it, dematting in Plano is likely the next step.
Why Dogs Get Matted Fur, and Why It Matters
Mats form when loose fur doesn't get brushed out. This happens fastest in dogs with longer coats, double coats, or curly coats—think Doodles, Poodles, Golden Retrievers, and Collies. In Plano's climate, especially in summer heat and humidity, double-coated dogs shed undercoat faster than owners can brush it out at home.
When mats stay in the coat, they hold heat and moisture. The skin underneath gets warm and damp, which creates the perfect environment for yeast and bacterial growth. The mats also pull on the hair follicles, causing pain and skin irritation. Dogs scratch at mats out of discomfort, which often makes them bigger.
Walk into most Plano grooming salons with a matted dog, and you'll hear one of two things: a quote for shaving the whole coat, or a quote that doesn't account for how long dematting actually takes. Lakeside prices dematting by the minute, so you only pay for the work we actually do—not a guess or a blanket add-on.

Dematting is priced per minute. Light matting on one or two areas runs $20-$40, depending on your dog's size and how long the work takes. Heavy matting across the whole coat can run $75-$150 or more.
We'll give you a clear estimate before we start. If the work is going to cost more than $10 once we get into it, we'll call you and tell you what we've found and what it'll cost to finish. You make the final call on whether to proceed.

Why Dematting at Lakeside is Different

Two big things set us apart: we don't cage your dog while we work, and your dog gets the same groomer every time if you request it.
Dematting takes longer than a bath. Many Plano grooming salons put dogs in cages while they wait. At Lakeside, we keep dogs in open space grouped by size. No cages, ever.
Request Ruby, Kay, or DeAngelo by name, and they'll know your dog's coat, how much your dog tolerates being handled, and exactly what you want next time. One groomer who knows your dog is faster and gentler than a new person every visit.
We'll also text you about 20 minutes before your dog is ready, so you're not left waiting around the salon or your car.

The best dematting is the one you prevent at home.
Dogs with long or curly coats need brushing 2-3 times a week to stop mats before they form. Double-coated dogs in Plano's summer climate need brushing at least weekly, sometimes more during shed season.
Use a slicker brush or undercoat rake, not a comb—a comb slides over mats instead of breaking them up. Brush all the way down to the skin, not just the topcoat. Pay special attention to behind the ears, the armpits, between the hind legs, and under the tail—mats love those spots.
If you're not sure how to brush your dog properly, ask your groomer. Most will show you the right technique and the right tools.
